The Jeff Cook Effect

Created 29/03/04

Following the coil device posted by Jeff Cook, I decided to see the effect for myself.  The coil is said to cause a flame to be bent towards it, too repel metals that should be attracted, to repel a small wooden ball suspended on a cord and to cause a pressure sensation on the skin.

I have tested the Cook Coil and you can see the test setup below.  At first I thought I had seen success, only to realise a measurement error.  First of all I suspended some scissors from a thin cord and hung them in front the large end of the coil.  When energised the scissors swung towards the coil and stuck to it due to normal electromagnetic affect.  I then placed the scissors at the other end of the coil by the thin part.  When energised the scissors were repelled away from the coil!!!  At first I thought I was seeing a strange affect that should not be, however upon placing a compass near the scissors they repelled the compass needle indicting the scissors had become magnetised, probably by the original side of the coil.  To test this I reversed the polarity on the coils and tried again.  This time the scissors were repelled by the large end and attracted to the small end.  I then tried any possible affects on a flame, of which I could see none.  Perhaps I have in correctly built the coil, but I see no evidence of any strange affects.
